View from the Conductor's Circle

A man who wants to lead the orchestra must turn his back on the crowd.

  1. Kathleen, do you know the book Leadership Jazz, by Max DePree? I think you would enjoy it and find it useful as you work with the metaphor of music. Also, John Paul Lederach and his daughter Angie have just written a new book about conflict with music as the central metaphor but it was published in Australia, so I can’t find it on Amazon yet.

Shirley, Thank you for your addition to the conversation. I am not familiar with DePree’s Leadership Jazz. I will take a look at it as well as be on the lookout for the Lederach book. Some time ago, I wrote a longer piece about organization jazz. I will also point readers to Living the Questions and your chapter titled, “How can I keep from singing: Seeking the Wisdom of Sound”. In my opinion, leaders cannot lead without followers; people will exceed expectations when their leader creates a culture of service as the leader serves them so that they can serve others.
